Where It All Began
Beach Terrace traces its roots back to the early 1960s, when Henry Mayers purchased a stretch of oceanfront land along the Carlsbad coastline. The property was later developed by his daughters, Marge and Joan, along with their husbands, Tony and Bob, who built the original “Apartment Motel,” today known as the Ocean Front Building.
That original design helped shape one of Beach Terrace’s most distinctive features: oversized guest rooms with a spacious, residential feel rarely found along the California coast today.
Over the following decades, the family continued to thoughtfully and organically grow the property. As Carlsbad evolved into a beloved beach destination, Beach Terrace expanded alongside it, adding a second building in the 1970s and a third in the 1980s while preserving the relaxed coastal spirit, independent character, and personalized hospitality guests have loved for generations.
Approximately 65 years later, we're proud to remain family-owned, fiercely independent, and deeply connected to the community we've watched grow up around us. We continue to share a rare piece of classic Southern California beach culture: welcoming guests to “sand more, stress less,” and settle into the rhythm of the coast.
