If you're as excited about dinner as you are about the beach, you're in good company. It's easy to plan a whole day here around one cinnamon roll or a single dinner reservation, and the town gives you plenty to work with.
Here's how we'd spend a weekend of foodie experiences in Carlsbad, from the first coffee to the last bite, with plenty of beach time in between.
Start Your Morning With Coffee at Beach Terrace
The first coffee of the day is best taken slowly. Before the Village wakes up, the beach mostly belongs to early walkers and a few surfers checking the waves.
Take your cup out to the balcony, or carry a pastry from the breakfast spread down toward the sand. Keep an eye on the water while you're at it, since dolphins regularly cruise this stretch of coast.
There's no reason to hurry. Brunch will wait.
Wander Into Carlsbad Village for Breakfast or Brunch
When you're ready for something heartier, Carlsbad Village is a short walk away.
- Cafe Topes has been family-owned since 2013, and its cinnamon rolls are roughly the size of a throw pillow. Share one with the table, or go all in with the cinnamon roll French toast.
- Shorehouse Kitchen on State Street is the pick for a longer, sit-down brunch, with a big patio and dishes like crispy risotto eggs Benedict.
- Wildland is the fastest option. Order a latte and a pastry at the counter, and you'll be back outside in minutes.
Afterward, take the long way back along State Street and browse a few boutiques while breakfast settles.
Make Lunch Part of your Beach Day
Lunch is the one meal we'd leave unplanned. If you spent the morning on a surfboard, you'll want something hearty. If you spent it shopping, a quick bite might be plenty.
Fish tacos, pizza, and sushi are all a few blocks from the sand, so lunch can be as quick or as leisurely as the day calls for. Then it's back to the beach for the rest of the afternoon.
Save the Afternoon for Something Sweet
A proper foodie weekend has a fourth meal, and it's dessert. Plan for it.
- The Strawberry Shack sells shortcakes and its signature strawberry-lavender sundae through a walk-up window, so you can carry yours straight to the beach. Kids tend to vote for this one.
- Handel's Homemade Ice Cream makes its ice cream fresh every day in the Village, and the flavor list is long enough that everyone in the family can walk out with a different favorite.
- Stella Jean's Ice Cream leans adventurous, with flavors like ube and mango sticky rice served in house-made waffle cones.
Ice cream before dinner is a vacation rule we fully support.
Make Dinner the Main Event
Dinner is where the foodie restaurants in Carlsbad earn their reputation, and you can keep it casual or go all out without leaving the Village.
For a laid-back night:
- Campfire makes a great first-night dinner. Grab a patio seat and work your way through the cocktail list.
- Nick's on State does hearty American classics, and the warm butter cake is worth saving room for.
- GONZO! is a family-owned ramen shop that landed near the top of Yelp's list of California's best ramen spots. The Gonzo Red, a spicy miso ramen made with house-made chili oil, brings real heat, and there's a kids' ramen on the menu for younger diners.
For a celebration:
- Jeune et Jolie is chef Eric Bost's modern French restaurant and the one we'd book for a milestone birthday or anniversary.
- Lilo, run by the same team as Jeune et Jolie, serves a tasting menu worth clearing the whole evening for.
Both have Michelin stars, so book several weeks out. There are more places to eat in Carlsbad than one weekend can cover, so pick a few favorites and save the rest for next time.
Take the Food Adventure Beyond Carlsbad
With an extra day, widen the map. Spend the afternoon at Moonlight Beach in Encinitas, then stay for dinner at Herb & Sea. Or walk Fletcher Cove in Solana Beach before a steak at Rare Society.
When you want a big-city dinner, San Diego's best tables are a straight shot down the I-5. Go for dinner, then head back and fall asleep to the sound of the waves.
Your Perfect Carlsbad Foodie Weekend
- Friday: Check in and take a drink out to the balcony. Walk the beach before dinner, then head to GONZO! or Campfire.
- Saturday: Start slow at the hotel, then walk to Cafe Topes for a cinnamon roll. Spend the afternoon on the sand with a detour to The Strawberry Shack, and save your appetite for Jeune et Jolie or Lilo.
- Sunday: Keep the morning slow with coffee on the balcony. Grab a Wildland latte for the road before the drive home.
End the Weekend the Carlsbad Way
On your last morning, resist the urge to squeeze in one more reservation. Take a plate from the breakfast spread at Beach Terrace out to the balcony and give the ocean a long last look. If there's time before checkout, walk the shoreline once more.
The best weekends here leave a little room in the schedule. Not every hour needs a plan, and between reservations, there's no shortage of things to do in Carlsbad.
Beach Terrace has been family-owned since the 1960s, and it's still the only Carlsbad hotel on the sand. Our spacious guest rooms are close enough to the Village to walk to dinner and close enough to the water to hear it all night. Book your stay at Beach Terrace and make your next Carlsbad weekend one worth eating your way through.
You'll head home with a few new favorite restaurants and almost certainly some sand in your shoes.
