Why Guests Love Eating Their Way Through Carlsbad
Ask our front desk team where to eat in Carlsbad, and you'll rarely get just one answer. Most of us have a favorite and a backup, and everyone has an opinion about what to order.
Carlsbad makes it hard to pick just one. Few beach towns this size can claim two Michelin-starred restaurants a few blocks from the sand, and fewer have a katsu spot named after one of the owners' cats.
The best part is how little planning it takes. Stay on the beach until the light turns gold, then rinse off and walk to dinner. When you're in the mood for something different, North County and San Diego are a short drive away. Here are the places to eat in Carlsbad that our team recommends most, plus a few beyond town that are worth leaving the beach for.
Walkable From Beach Terrace
Most of our favorites are in Carlsbad Village, a few minutes' walk from the hotel. Leave the car parked and enjoy the stroll through the Village.
- Campfire is where we send people after a long day at the beach. Much of the menu comes off the fire, and nobody on the patio minds if your hair is still salty.
- Nick's on State is our crowd-pleaser pick. Elevated American comfort food and good cocktails make it a safe bet when your group can't agree on anything else.
- Wildland is the one we visit most on our own time. It's a bakery and coffee bar in the morning and a pasta-and-pizza spot at night. It doesn't take reservations, which is a relief with kids in tow. Before the beach, pair a pastry with the olive oil coffee.
- Blue Ocean Robata & Sushi Bar handles our sushi cravings, and the robata-grilled skewers are there for anyone who'd rather skip raw fish.
- Little Kiki Katsu & More is the newest member of the Blue Ocean family, bringing the cat-named charm we mentioned above to a menu of crispy katsu, Japanese sandos, and sake. The space is small and cozy, so settle in and come hungry.
- Jeune et Jolie earned Carlsbad its first Michelin star, and its modern French menu is still our top date-night pick. Weekend tables go fast, so we recommend reserving ahead of time!
- Lilo is the reservation people plan entire trips around. Chef Eric Bost serves a 22-seat tasting menu in the back half of the Wildland building, a former boogie board factory. Dinner starts with small bites on the patio before you move inside. It earned a Michelin star within weeks of opening, so book as early as you can. If you're celebrating an anniversary or planning a babymoon, it's a memorable way to make the trip feel extra special.
- Little Victory Wine Bar is our pick for a glass before or after dinner. It comes from the couple behind Little Victory Wine Market in Encinitas and has become a Village gathering spot since opening in 2025.
The Village quiets down after dinner, and by the time you reach the hotel, the waves are louder than any street noise. Having this many places to eat in Carlsbad Village so close to a hotel on the sand is something our guests mention again and again.
A Short Drive
A few favorites are worth the drive, and none of them are far.
- Vigilucci's Seafood & Steakhouse sits across from the ocean on Carlsbad Boulevard, about five minutes by car or a 20-minute walk along the coast. Ask for a table on the front patio and book around sunset. Between the steaks, seafood, Italian classics, and a kids' menu, everyone at the table finds something.
- 2051 Cucina Italiana is a family-owned restaurant off Palomar Airport Road that cooks dishes from Modena, in Italy's Emilia-Romagna region. The pasta is made fresh daily, and the pinsa, a lighter, airier cousin of pizza, is meant to be shared.
- The Wise Ox is a butcher shop and deli in La Costa, run by chef Brad Wise. Order the Philly cheesesteak or the dry-aged burger, or pick up sandwiches to take back to the beach.
Make an Evening of It
Encinitas and Solana Beach are both about 20 minutes south, and each is worth a full afternoon.
If you head down early, start at Atelier Manna in Encinitas. Chef Andrew Bachelier cooked at Jeune et Jolie before opening his own place, which earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand. It's only open for breakfast and lunch, and not every day, so check hours before you go. Spend the afternoon on Coast Highway 101, then stay for dinner at Herb & Sea, where coastal seafood leads the menu.
In Solana Beach, browse the shops on Cedros Avenue before dinner at Rare Society. It's Brad Wise's modern steakhouse, so if you liked lunch at The Wise Ox, you already know the kitchen takes its beef seriously.
Worth the Drive for a San Diego Night Out
San Diego is less than an hour south, close enough for dinner and far enough that you'll want a rideshare home. Spend the day in Carlsbad, head into the city, and come back to the coast when you're done.
Downtown San Diego
- Callie serves award-winning Mediterranean food in East Village.
- Animae is a steakhouse with Asian-inspired flavors and a dramatic dining room.
- Nobu is the call when sushi is the main event.
Little Italy
- Juniper & Ivy serves creative New American cooking from an acclaimed chef.
- Ironside Fish & Oyster is our oyster bar pick in Little Italy, and the seafood menu goes well beyond the raw bar.
Point Loma
- Cesarina is where we send anyone craving handmade pasta.
Come for the Beach, Stay for the Food
o two nights here have to look alike. One evening might be pizza at Wildland and an early night; the next, a tasting menu you'll talk about for years. With this many foodie experiences in Carlsbad, it's tempting to plan the whole trip around meals. Plenty of our guests do.
Mornings start with breakfast at Beach Terrace, and the afternoons belong to the sand. When you need a break from eating, there are plenty of things to do in Carlsbad within walking distance. At the end of the night, the fire pits and other hotel amenities are waiting.
As the only beachfront hotel in Carlsbad located directly on the sand, Beach Terrace keeps you close to it all. Book your stay and stop by the front desk when you arrive. We'll have opinions.
